Tell Me About It...

I love a good story and that's why I love journalism. As a journalism student at UNC Chapel Hill, my favorite part of my classes is being far away from the classroom meeting people and telling their stories. As a part of one of my journalism classes, I'll be writing this blog twice a week my second semester senior year, telling some stories that I love and have encountered.

    Someone’s in the kitchen…

Surprisingly it’s me! I hate quarantine because I miss everything I loved about my life: going to class, being a journalist, seeing my friends, being around family, going out to eat, and spending time at my sorority house. Those last few things posed a bit of a problem when I ended up in my apartment alone. My mom is a great cook and so are all the chefs who worked the ZTA kitchen. When I did have to feed myself on weekends, I turned to leftover boxes from Zeta, eating out, and take out. There was nothing wrong with that because it was the weekend, so only two days…nothing to…

Two Books; Two Days; Ten Recs

Yeah, I did that. I read two books in only two days. A book a day. I won’t be continuing to read a book a day because I have college classes, exams, and a job hunt to worry about, but when I took Easter weekend off from all that I returned to something that I always took comfort in: reading. I love to read because the stories in the books temporarily take me out of the world I am in. This is especially helpful right now in such a confusing world. I’ve always loved to read. While other kids hid their Nintendo DS under the covers after bedtime, hoping the…

    Tales From Quarantine

Alright, nobody is really “having fun” being stuck in the house all the time with events cancelled and no outside interaction. But, everyone is making it work. I was really worried about how I would make it work as a reporter in isolation. My favorite part of the job is going to new places and meeting new people every day. I love the idea that I would never be stuck behind a desk in one place; in essence the whole world is my office! What a view right? Well, the shelter in place order has obviously changed the physical aspect of that, but I’ve still been able to meet new…

    Always

Quarantine has given me the opportunity get back to reading my current book series obsession (Game of Thrones), but since I’m nowhere near done with those books, this is a post about my first series love: the one and only Harry Potter. (^^Accurate representation of my actions during quarantine) Harry Potter is a series I was raised on. This is about to be a fangirl post, so buckle up. I LOVE Harry Potter. Like, love Harry Potter. I’ve read all the books, seen all the movies, been to Harry Potter World in Universal, read and seen the spinoffs, seen the Very Potter Musical comedy, and played the whole Wizarding World…

    When You Quarantine an Extrovert

When you quarantine an extrovert, she won’t take it well. She’ll cry and complain because she won’t know how to cope. She’ll miss her independence, her autonomy, her friends, her apartment, her town, and her life. She won’t get out of bed or change out of her pajamas for a few days. Finally, she’ll get moving. When you quarantine an extrovert, she’ll start to turn to other comforts. She’ll lay out on the porch with her next Game of Thrones book (A Storm of Swords) when it’s warm and sunny. She’ll curl up on the couch and binge her next show obsession (Little Fires Everywhere) when it’s cold and rainy.…

    Froomies

“Froomies.” This is a word that has a highly debated meaning among my friends. Whether it means “future roommate” or “friend roommate” it’s a thing that every girl says about the people she lives with in college. This is a post exclusively about my roomie: the one and only Lindsey Pope. Recently, Lindsey and I had a confusing conversation about how and when exactly we met freshman year. We didn’t live together then, but we have for the past three years. She said she remembered meeting girls from my suite and we had all hung out in our dorm one night. I thought about it for a second, and came…

    News-y

Last year in mid-February, I was what one might call a cub reporter for Carolina Week – UNC’s student news TV broadcast. I was really nervous in every pitch meeting, and while I turned content for every weekly show, I never anchored or reported live. In late February of 2019, I pitched that we cover the dedication of a future monument site on Franklin Street where nine African American men staged a sit-in in 1960. I was told to “grab a VO or a VOSOT” (shoot video and maybe a short interview) for the next show. I had no idea what to expect. I had interviewed the Chapel Hill Mayor…

    Under the Influence

Earlier in this blog journey, I wrote a post about myself. It was a story crafted to project how I wanted readers to see me. The same goes for social media. Everyone’s social media tells a story; a story they carefully craft to include the parts they want people to see. And each social media site is a little bit different. My Twitter and LinkedIn are curated to be very professional. My Facebook is a pretty good breakdown of my life for friends and family to stay up to date about what I’m up to. My Instagram focuses on flattering pictures of me showcasing my fun travels and events. I…

    Sounds About Right

Have you ever heard silence? Seriously, if we’re quiet and listening to the world, even if we’re somewhere quiet, there are all kinds of sounds. We talked about the importance of sound design in storytelling in my emerging technologies class because we are building our own virtual reality scene experience. It isn’t easy. I spent almost five straight hours working to add the right directional sound to my experience, before I gave up and came back the next day to keep working on it. But, we do it because sound is a crucial part of telling a story. Saving Private Ryan is one of the film standards of compelling sound.…

    Fake News

Ok, so I’m not talking about that fake news. (Sorry for the clickbait). But, in honor of President’s Day, let’s talk about a famous story…that didn’t happen. George Washington and the cherry tree. You might know the myth, and interestingly enough it’s not the only famous history story that never happened! Here are my top three favorite famous stories that never actually happened. 3) Nero Played the Fiddle While Rome Burned The story goes that the crazy emperor Nero decided to have a portion of the city burned to make space for his new palace, but it went terribly wrong and the whole city caught fire and was destroyed over…
