Froomies
“Froomies.” This is a word that has a highly debated meaning among my friends. Whether it means “future roommate” or “friend roommate” it’s a thing that every girl says about the people she lives with in college. This is a post exclusively about my roomie: the one and only Lindsey Pope.
Recently, Lindsey and I had a confusing conversation about how and when exactly we met freshman year. We didn’t live together then, but we have for the past three years. She said she remembered meeting girls from my suite and we had all hung out in our dorm one night. I thought about it for a second, and came back with, “Wait! I remember…we were in front of the Kappa house during rush and I walked up to you and my suite-mate Meghan…and you were crying to her because Zeta just dropped you!” So, that is actually the first time we met. Not very “meet cute” or even memorable. Ironically, Lindsey joined Kappa and I joined Zeta so we can joke about it.
Lindsey and I have become quite the duo of my college experience despite our very different stories. We actually grew up about half an hour away from each other; her in Lexington, North Carolina and me in Clemmons, NC. These two small towns in the middle of the state have very little in common. Lexington has a charming downtown, known for barbeque and surrounded by farm fields. There’s one Wal-Mart in the whole area. Clemmons is a suburb highway stop just outside of the trendy city of Winston-Salem with every fast food restaurant and gas station imaginable. Along with lots of cookie-cutter house filled neighborhoods. Lindsey is a first-generation college student going to graduate school. My mom went to UNC and my brother and I both go there now.
The first time I drove to Lexington, Lindsey laughed at me when I said there was a tractor on the road and I didn’t know how to handle the situation. No matter how different Lindsey and I’s stories were…and are (she’s going to grad school in North Carolina and I’m applying to reporter jobs across the country) we found each other and created a common story. A really, really fantastic one!
I often think of how the course of everyone’s lives are easily veered by small events and how much that can impact our futures. I have no idea where I would be today if I had not met and lived with Lindsey. Linds, it’s been a blast! I can’t wait to see where each of our stories…as well as our joint friendship story goes from here.
